Photovoltaic and wind power systems have great potential for sustainable energy generation, but the efficient storage of electricity generated by sunshine and wind, which is often used later (such as on dark, windless evenings), poses a challenge.
Alexander Opitz and his team, supported by their commercial partner VERBUND AG, are therefore conducting research in the new CD Laboratory for Oxygen Ion Batteries at TU Wien into how the eponymous (and sustainably producible) oxygen ion batteries can be used as a new type of stationary energy storage device. This basic research will make an important contribution to the efficient and environmentally friendly storage of energy generated in this way, which will benefit all sides!
