The term ‘bioavailability’ describes, in simple terms, the proportion of an ingested or administered substance that is available for utilisation in an organism: In order to achieve an ideal level of bioavailability in food and feed to increase the health and well-being of humans and animals, a comprehensive understanding of nutritional processes is necessary. That is why Head of Centre Bernhard Blank-Landeshammer and the team at the new JR Centre for Innovative Bioavailability Research at FH OÖ (Campus Wels), supported by commercial partners Agromed Austria GmbH and PM International AG, are researching the molecular mechanisms in the context of nutrient absorption, transport and utilisation in general and with regard to bioavailability in particular. The results of this basic research will contribute to the development of optimised and at the same time resource-saving food (supplements) for humans and feed for animals.
