Oncological research is making steady progress, yet the problems of side effects associated with many cancer treatments and the ability of tumours to develop resistance to drugs during the course of treatment remain. In this context, Head of Laboratory Beate Rinner and her team at the CD Laboratory for Precision Oncology: Lipid Emulsions as a Paradigm Shift in Chemotherapy at the Medical University of Graz research, supported by commercial partner Fresenius Kabi Austria GmbH, the use of novel lipid emulsions based on omega-3 fatty acids from algae oil as a potential adjunct to chemotherapy, to make it more effective and better tolerated: The research is investigating the specific compositions and combinations in which these lipid emulsions can simultaneously target tumour sites particularly effectively whilst sparing healthy cells as much as possible – findings that are intended to form the basis for making chemotherapy treatments more effective, more personalised and better tolerated in the future, thereby enabling better care for patients.
