In recent years, enormous progress has been made in the development of modern materials and technologies for modifying their surfaces. As a result of this further development, the efficiency of many applications has been significantly increased.

However, materials science offers further innovative potential for improvement through the development of complex and innovative materials with unique microstructures. These developments are expected to provide excellent application behaviour under extreme operating conditions. Modern applications require maximum mechanical strength even at high temperatures and under the influence of aggressive, oxidative and corrosive environments. In order to develop such materials with unique properties, it is essential that the manufacturing technologies used are further developed at the same time.

In order to fulfil the increasing requirements of today's material and tool applications, plasma-assisted methods for the deposition of nanostructured layers have proven to be promising and versatile processes. This makes it possible to improve and optimise the functional properties of surfaces of traditional and newly developed substrate materials.

The aim of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Advanced Synthesis of Novel Multifunctional Coatings is to contribute to the development of a new competitive coating technology with higher efficiency to enable the synthesis of novel, hierarchical, nanostructured coatings with improved quality and performance for tooling applications. The Christian Doppler Laboratory will develop special coating systems with innovative design and architecture that not only withstand extreme application conditions but also provide excellent performance in the application.

The development of a new technology for the synthesis of complex multifunctional high-performance coatings within the Christian Doppler Laboratory is expected to further increase the efficiency of industrial tool applications and reduce production costs.
