"Peritoneal dialysis", also known as "home dialysis", is a form of treatment for chronic kidney failure in which the peritoneum acts as a natural filter membrane through which waste products and excess fluid are removed from the body: An established therapy, but one that can often lead to dangerous pathological processes as a side effect, collectively referred to as “metaflammation” (metabolic inflammation).
Head of Laboratory Rebecca Herzog and her team at the newly opened CD Laboratory for Peritoneal Regulation of the Immune-Metabolic Ecosystem in Peritoneal Dialysis at MedUni Vienna are therefore conducting extensive basic research, supported by commercial partner Zytoprotec Flexible Kapitalgesellschaft, to decipher the mechanisms of this metaflammation and thus create a scientific basis for new therapeutic strategies: The aim is to be able to provide even better care for dialysis patients in the future.
