In the steel industry, high-quality end products and production that is as sustainable, efficient and reliable as possible are equally important. The new Christian Doppler Laboratory for Reactive Flows in Green Steel Production and Refinement at Montanuniversität Leoben aims to help achieve the ideal balance between these goals. To this end, Head of Laboratory Ebrahim Karimi-Sibaki and his team, supported by commercial partners RHI Magnesita GmbH, Primetals Technologies Austria GmbH and INTECO melting and casting technologies GmbH, are developing a comprehensive understanding of how molten steel interacts with its environment, how impurities can be efficiently removed, and how product quality, energy consumption and the overall environmental impact of steel production are influenced by transport phenomena.
