Wood is a sustainable building material, but when a tree is processed in a sawmill, only about half of it is currently utilised as such; the remaining 50 per cent or so is produced as wood chips, sawdust and bark. Head of Laboratory Markus Lukacevic and his team, supported by commercial partner HS Timber Group GmbH, are therefore developing processes for the production and characterisation of sustainable biocomposite materials from this supposed "sawmill waste", which will benefit the timber industry, consumers and the environment alike!
