Interdisciplinary high-tech fight against lung cancer: New CD Laboratory at MedUni Vienna

06.06.2023: Primary lung cancer (i.e. originating from the cells of the lungs themselves) is still one of the most common cancers and the leading cause of cancer death worldwide: A new CD Laboratory gives hope to patients!

The two Heads of Laboratory Georg Langs and Helmut Prosch of the newly opened Christian Doppler Laboratory for Machine Learning Driven Precision Imaging at the Medical University of Vienna, supported by corporate partner Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics GmbH, have put together a highly interdisciplinary network of the highly qualified members of the laboratory team and external experts, resulting in a collaboration of renowned scientists from the fields of machine learning (ML), medical imaging, oncology and pathology: By integrating radiological and pathological images and molecular data using new ML methods, new predictive models for lung cancer and its individual treatment will emerge, paving the way for the development of new ML concepts in precision imaging for better individualised treatments.

As each lung cancer disease is unique, this highly promising integration of AI (artificial intelligence) and imaging thus aims to improve individualised treatment outcomes by, among other things, quantitatively assessing and predicting disease and treatment trajectories, dynamically applying ML (in relation to evolving and emerging diagnostic technologies and treatment options) to the large, diverse routine patient population, and in turn combining ML-derived data with understanding of biological processes: This will simultaneously increase the number of patients benefiting from ML in therapy and create a basis for methods whose applicability goes beyond the topic of lung cancer.
