The new CD Laboratory for People and Object Surface Authentication at the University of Salzburg, headed by Andreas Uhl and supported by commercial partners Gofore GmbH and SKIDATA GmbH, is conducting parallel research in two areas of AI and image processing that are often only investigated individually: On the one hand, it is looking at how intelligent, multi-sensory facial recognition systems can be used to minimise waiting times and increase security at large events. On the other hand, it is researching the authentication of objects based on their microscopic surface structure: Based on the basic research in this area, future users shall become enabled to determine whether a product is original or counterfeit using their mobile phone cameras – information that can be life-saving in the case of counterfeit medicines!
